The Phone Film Maker

The time of the film maker as someone who actually uses huge cameras loaded down with Kodak film rolls has come and gone. With the exception of a few film makers, such as Christopher Nolan, most have made the switch to shooting digitally. They now use high end pro-sumer camcorders like the Red and the Red One to shoot feature films in Hollywood. While independent Film makers are using Canon and Panasonic Dslr cameras to shoot their feature length films. During the past year or so their has been a growing movement to use even smaller devices to produce feature length films.

Some micro budget film makers have decided to shoot films using smart phones such as the iPhone 4s and soon the iPhone 5. With the addition of inexpensive add on lenses the iPhone can shoot footage to rival the larger dslr cameras such as the Rebel t2i and Canon 7d.  Many apps have been created to aid the independent film maker to shoot more cinematic footage. The most popular of these apps is named Filmic Pro. With this App the iPhone is able to record footage at 24 frames per seconds. This frame rate gives footage the look of a Hollywood style film. There is also an app that offers the ability to shoot footage as if it was being done with an old super 8 camera. Add to this the available editing software there has been hundreds of short films shot and posted online using the iPhone and even the Galaxy S. At this moment there are a few features in production and in post production that have been shot using a smart phone.

There are dozens of web sites that are dedicated to this style of film making. The number of such sites are growing by the day. There are also a number of festivals that are solely dedicated to promoting and marketing short films that have been shot using the smart phones.

It will only be a matter of time before these smart phones begin to produce feature length films that rival in quality those made by mush larger and more expensive equipment.
