Filmmaker or iPhone Filmmaker
I am sure that many of you have asked yourselves what kind of filmmaker am I.
Am I a really filmmaker or just an iPhone filmmaker?
The problem with this question is that it assumes that there is a natural difference. Really filmmakers come in all forms. For those of us who have spent decades studying the history of film and those who mastered the craft we have no doubts that many of the legendary filmmakers of the past would have embraced the handheld technology that we take for granted today. Some consider Orson Wells the greatest filmmaker of all time. Embraces by Hollywood during his youth and called a grandmaster after the release of Citizen Kane he spent the second half of his life struggling to find enough money and equipment to shoot one of the many films that he had written and could not finance. It sad to think about how many great movies were never shot because of this one filmmaker’s inability to have something like an iphone which would have allowed him to shoot, edit and release a motion picture all with the same device. Do not allow this to happen to you.
There is greatness in many of you and all that is required to show this to the world is the simple act of believing in it. The difference between the hobbyist and the pro is belief and work ethic.
Today we will look at some short films and another tutorial on iPhone filmmaking. Also, I intend to add as a bonus from now one a look at one aspect of the craft of filmmaking. It could be writing, directing, lighting, or acting. There is so much to learn and so little time to do it in.
Let’s begin overseas. I believe that the places where the next great filmmakers will appear will be eastern and Asia nations. Place where the only access to film making equipment comes in the form of an iPhone and the Apps available for it. This film is from Malaysia and it is titled: Absence
Next is an iPhone 11 short film titled Upload.
Next up is a short film that shows what you can create if you are all alone with just a favorite prop and a little imagination.
Now some advice from an iPhone filmmaker followed by his short film.
Now it is time to close with a filmmaking tip. The topic for today is something referred to as Framing.
