Build Your Own Film School
Your Film School
Many of us have created our own film school. We use books and online tutorials to learn the basics. Some of us have learned to study dvds rather than watching them. I have reached the point where I have trouble watching a film unless it is truly great for the simple reason that I am always analyzing the shots, the scenes and the choices that the director has made.
To become a film maker you are going to be going to school. It does not have to be a real school. The one that I will help you to create will be good enough.
Let us begin here at this site. I have provided a great deal of basic information about various types of film making. Understand that these are the basics. I have created a series of blogs that can help you further your education as a digital film maker. I will list them here. http://cannondigitalfeaturefilmmaking.blogspot.com/ http://yournobudgetscreenplay.blogspot.com/ http://thehorrorfilmmaker.blogspot.com/
Next I would suggest that you read all that you can on the craft of filmmaking. If there is a territory that you are really interested in such as writing or directing or marketing books are the first place to go. Blogs are the second place and then video tutorials.
At the end of the day the greatest film school that you will ever visit is the set of your first film. Whether you are just a worker on that set or you are the one running it. You will learn by doing. Like weight training, the more you do it, the better and stronger you will become.
To do a short film or a feature?
This is up to you. I am a bit long winded and I also believe that you should always have a way at the end of the process to turn a profit so I am a feature kind of guy. Features have longer lives and are easier to monetize. Short films can help to spread the word about your talent, gain you a following and get you feature work in the future. It is really up to you. Do what feels right. Quintin Tarantino is a features only type of guy while Ridley Scott learned his craft by directing over 300 hundred commercials before his first feature.
Below I am going to be including a few video tutorials. I have tried to find videos that offer a grand overview of digital feature film making.
