FILMMAKING, EDITING IS A LEARNED SKILL
One of the skills that every successful filmmaker must develop is editing. You must learn the basic art of editing.
This is more than simply piecing one scene after another in the order that it was intended.
Filmmaking is not like putting together a jigsaw puzzle it is more like painting a portrait. This is why one thing is a game or a hobby and filmmaking is considered an art form.
How often have you heard a filmmaker being referred to as an artist?
There is an art to editing a film. Long after all of the footage has been shot the editor is there to craft the finished project.
Let’s take a black and white tutorial break to visit the greatest director of all time, Alfred Hitchcock (yes, he is the goat, watch just a few of his films and you will be a believer). He will be talking about editing his most famous film.
You will spend endless hours editing your work, like a composer, before you will be ready to show your iPhone film to the world. In the end, you will learn to love this process and discover that in the editing process you may find your voice as a movie maker.
Some filmmakers’ voices are so clear that we can tell who shot the film by watching a few seconds of edited footage.
Let’s have a look at a few filmmakers and their editing styles.
Not all filmmakers are their own editors, but many of them will work repeatedly with the same editor film after film. Once they have found someone that sees the world as they do they usually form something like an artistic marriage that could last for decades.
Now we will finish with Sergio Leoni, a visual genius whose work stands at the top of the Western Genre. This video will break down and explain how the scene is shot and edited together.
I have to admit that I learned a great deal while researching this post. I hope that some of the lessons here will make you a better filmmaker. There is nothing that you have seen here that cannot be reproduced using the camera inside of your iPhone along with an app or two and perhaps an add-on lens.
Thank you for visiting my blog. Have a great day.
